Some British war Grave Cemeteries in the Ypres area - then and now

This post continues a thread I started a few years back, of comparing photos of some cemeteries  from Sidney Hurst's book The Silent Cities, published in 1929, with how they look today. As a reminder, Hurst's book was intended to fulfill the need to have a photograph of each cemetery when complete, with the Cross of Sacrifice and headstones, and also to describe the geographical location of each one so loved ones could plan a visit.

CHESTER FARM CEMETERY



Name given to farm 1/2 mile S. of Blauwepoort Farm, on road from Zillebeke to Voormezeele. Cem. is opposite farm on NW side of road. Records 306 U.K., 87 Can., 21 Aust., 4 German burilas, and 6 special memorials.

KANDAHAR FARM CEMETERY



Kandahar Farm is on road to Wulverghem, 1 1/2 miles from Neuve-Eglise. Brit. front line ran little E of Wulverghem from the Autumn of 1914 to Summer of 1917, when Messines was captured. Records 211 U.K., 186 Aust., 33 N.Z., 6 Can., 7 Unknown, and 3 German burials.

MESSINES RIDGE BRITISH CEMETERY



6 miles S of Ypres, on W outskirts of village, on road to Neuve-Eglise. Created after Armistice from isolated graves in small cems. in battle-fields of the Salient. Contains Mem. to N.Z. 'Missing'. Records 990 U.K., 338 Aust., 125 N.Z., 60 S.A. burials, and 13 special memorials.

LA PLUS DOUVRE FARM CEMETERY



Little S of village of Wulverghem, 8 miles from Ypres and 6 from Armentieres, and 2 miles from Messines Sta. on narrow gauge-railway from Ypres. La Plus Douvre Farm was generally within British lines and was used as a Batt. Hdqtrs. for a time. Records 101 U.K., 88 Can., 86 Aust., 61 N.Z., and 9 German burials.


RATION FARM (LA PLUS DOUVRE) ANNEXE



N of La Plus Douvre Farm Cem. and 150 yards from road. Used from Jan 1915 to Jan 1918. Records 185 U.K., 12 Aust., 4 N.Z., 1 Unknown, and 1 German burials.

SOMER FARM CEMETERY



In an orchard on S side of road to Hollebeke, 1/2 mile NW of Wytschaete. Begun in June 1917 and used until March 1918. Records 65 U.K., and 19 Aust. burials also 5 special memorials. 

STRAND MILITARY CEMETERY



Close to French border, 4 miles N of Armentieres Sta. on Ypres road S of Ploegsteert Wood. The Cem. was established near Strand Trench in October 1914. Records 659 U.K., 284 Aust., 77 N.Z., 15 Can., 1 S.A., 4 Unknown, 4 German burials and 19 special memorials.

DERRY HOUSE CEMETERY



4 miles S of Ypres, 1 mile SE of village and sta., beyond Torreken Farm Cem., and was begun in June 1917 by 11 Div. (32nd Bgde.) and used as a front line Cem. until Dec. Records 126 U.k. and 37 Aust. burials.

OAK DUMP CEMETERY



3 1/2 miles S of Ypres Sta. between roads to Messines and Kemmel, E of  Voormezeele village, and S of Ypres-Comines Canal. Made by fighting units in July to Sept. 1917. Records 109 U.K., 2 Aust. burials and 2 special memorials.

SPOIL BANK CEMETERY



3 1/2 miles SE of Ypres Sta., 1 1/2 miles SW of Zillbeke village on N bank of Ypres Comines Canal on by-road to Verbrandenmolen. Burials were made practically continuously from Feb. 1915 to May 1918. Records 436 U.K. and 68 Aust., also 16 Can. burials. 

RUISSEAU FARM CEMETERY



1 mile W of Langemarck Sta., and 3 1/2 miles from Boesinghe Sta. Ruisseau Farm was taken by the Guards Div. on Oct. 8th 1917. Records 82 U.K. burials. 

DOCHY FARM NEW BRITISH CEMETERY



5 miles from Ypres on Zonnebeke road, 3/4 mile from Zonnebeke Sta. Begun after Armistice from battlefields of Boesinghe, St. Julien, Frezenberg and Passchendaele. Records 523 U.K., 305 Aust., 98 N.Z., 81 Can., 17 S.A., 1 Newfld., 412 Unknown burials, and 2 special memorials. 

LANCASHIRE COTTAGE CEMETERY



In Ploegsteert Wood, on S side of Ploegsteert-Warneton road, just W of cottage. Nearest stations are Armentieres and Warneton. This Cem. was in German hands from April 10th to Sept. 29th 1918. Records 229 U.K., 23 Aust., and 2 Can. burials. 

RAMPARTS CEMETERY



On W side of Lille Gate, at top of old rampart. Begun by French in Nov 1914 and used by British from Feb. 1915 to April 1918. Records 154 U.K., 14 N.Z., 11 Aust., 14 N.Z., 10 Can., and 3 Unknown burials.

SOLFERINO FARM CEMETERY



3 1/4 miles NW of Ypres Sta., 2 miles SW of old German front line of June 1917, 1/2 mile N of village on road running from 'Dawson's Corner' to Boesinghe. Records 293 U.K., 1 Newfld., and 1 B.W.I. burials. 

ST. QUENTIN CABARET MILITARY CEMETERY



St. Quentin Cabaret was an inn 500 yards E of Kandahar Farm, on S side of road from Neuve-Eglise to Messines. Cem. is E of inn and close to Wulverghem. Records 316 U.K., 68 Can., 64 N.Z., 7 Aust., 5 Unknown, and 2 German burials.
